DOSE:
  repeated inhaled Nitrous Oxide (gas)
BODY WEIGHT: 150 lb
[Erowid Note: Automotive nitrous oxide often has sulfur dioxide added to prevent inhalation, which causes extreme and painful coughing and is toxic.]
I have been using nitrous oxide for the last 10 or so years of my life. Initially all I had access to was nitrous from whipped cream cans. This is incredibly expensive and quite wasteful. Eventually I learned about whipped cream chargers or whippets which are fantastic fun but also quite expensive at as much as a dollar a hit.

I looked into purchasing a medical grade tank of nitrous but like most, I had no luck. Automotive nitrous is available in my area for as cheap as $4 a lb which is equivalent to as many as 60 whipped cream chargers. The problem is this gas is almost always denatured with the highly disgusting sulfur dioxide.

However the other day when I was at a head shop here in northern California I came across a device which I and friends are considering the holy grail for nitrous heads like us. It cost me $40 brand spanking new. This device simply screws onto an automotive nitrous tank such as those made by nitrous oxide systems, NOS (I prefer my 10lb tank for a night of fun!). A barb on the end holds a punching bag or plastic bag. When you carefully turn the nitrous tank on without the thing on it, there is absolutely no chance of using the resulting gas recreationally, the denaturant works surprisingly well. However with it attached, you can carefully fill up punching balloons with pure nitrous oxide on demand. Its just like having your own medical grade tank, freaking awesome!

The device purifies the gas as needed and is quite easy to use. It's lasted me several hundred pounds of nitrous oxide without any drop in performance. This thing is amazing!

Its sold for the purpose of scientific experimentation, including for making hybrid rockets or something like that. All I know is I now can spend $40 and get the equivalent of almost 600 whipped cream chargers.

To test the thing out I invited several friends over. I find nitrous goes fantastic with root beer and vanilla ice cream. My friends and I sat around the tank and filled up punching bags all night long, each with a solid 5 huge lung fulls of hippy crack.

Nitrous is a very different drug when done over the course of several hours. With whipped cream chargers, I get a sudden high that's very disorientating and overwhelming. Don't get me wrong I love doing nitrous this way! However when done over hours and with balloons holding multiple hits, the drug has a very different side.

After we got over doing as much nitrous as possible at a time we decided to start doing only half lung full hits with the rest being air. A continuous high is achieved this way which is similar to alcohol in its social lubricating effects. The deep voice is always hilarious especially once we start talking philosophy which always happens on the all night binges.

We've gotten to the point where we will fill 3x 10lb nitrous tanks, start our whippet party in the afternoon and go until early morning when the last of the nitrous is gone.

We used to use multiple 6 foot tall 2' plastic pipes full of sodium hydroxide to get the same results. This works but is incredibly dangerous. Not only do you have to work while high with a terribly caustic compound but there is a chance of explosion. As the nitrous turns from liquid into gas it cools down substantially. One time this super cold gas turned the caustic water we were bubbling it through into ice. The result was a plug at 800+ psi in pipe rated for nothing more than 100psi. The damn thing exploded.
