This is an overview of how I have learned to work effectively with a particular Ayahuasca recipe involving Syrian rue seeds and Diplopterys cabrerana leaves. It is a general description of a typical experience (although no two are ever alike) rather than a report on one specific experience. I will not use the word 'trip' in this report, as an Ayahuasca experience is not a trip.
I boil 4g of Syrian rue seeds in 2 litres of tap water with a Vitamin C tablet for approx one hour until the volume is reduced to about 60ml of liquid. I strain off the fluid and discard the seeds. At the same time I cut up 20g of dried Cabrerana leaves and boil them separately also in 2 litres of water with a Vitamin C tablet. This time I boil the infusion down to approx 20ml of fluid. I find that adding a Vitamin C tablet helps enormously to reduce the bitter taste as well as possibly helping the extraction process.
I have found the hard way that using more than 20g of leaves can lead to a 'runaway' experience where the Ayahuasca entities take over and its very difficult to stay focused or even sane for a few hours. If you want fun, then stop reading this and go somewhere else. I make no apologies for being blunt, this is not a game for kids who want to 'trip balls'.
Preparing a space for the experience is important. I find that I need to lie down for most of the experience and sit up or squat for the remainder. There will be no watching TV, messing at a computer, going for a walk or anything else. I need to be able to give up to 4 hours undivided attention to Ayahuacsa. If I choose to have a sitter present I make sure they stay quiet and generally out of my way. The more 'ceremony' I put into my Ayahuasca sessions, the more 'successful' they will be. I find leaving at least 4 hours between food and taking the Ayahuasca to be the most effective, but I dont like to feel too weak from hunger either. A certain amount of energy is needed to face Chaliponga.
I drink the Syrian rue infusion slowly over about 20mins and then lie down and listen to some music for approx 45 mins. I will instinctively know when the Harmaline has taken effect. I drink the Diplopterys infusion slowly in 3 to 7 gulps. I will know instinctively how much to drink. This is an important point; I dont 'have to' drink it all just because I went to all that trouble to prepare it, and I am not 'insulting' Ayahuasca by leaving some behind. I have learned in time that Ayahuasca itself decides how much I need.
I then lie down straight away as otherwise dizziness and nausea can come on very quickly. The following is my 'entry method' which I have found works successfully with me.
As the Ayahuasca takes effect, various energy centres in my body will become activated and there will be an energy flow along various pathways. I do not fight against it. I accept it as something that cannot be understood scientifically. I dont try and ask myself what is 'really' happening, I just play along with it. I find that I need to make various adjustments to my body position to 'assist' the energy flow.
I have learned after 100 Ayahuasca experiences to 'go with it'. I usually experience a transformation in my sense of self especially as the nausea rises inside me. Its feels subjectively that I am 'taken over' by a 'pilot entity' who know how to control and guide my body and mind through this phase of the journey. I do not fight against this feeling of 'possession', as these entities know what they are doing. Invariably the 'pilot' entity successfully guides me through the nausea and into Ayahuasca Space, in which I am 'myself' again.
I always thank the pilot entity for getting me through. Respect is crucial in Ayahuasca Space. This is not the place for 'feeling silly' for speaking out loud to something which logic tells me is 'just' a projection of my mind. The rules of consensual reality no longer apply When entities appear in sudden and dramatic form, either just one to begin with, or a miltitude, I always greet and welcome them. This mindset can be the difference between them accepting me, and them kicking my spiritual ass.
I tend to find that for this next hour I am unable and unwilling to open my eyes or to move. Ayahuasca then deals with recent 'issues' which I have brought to the Space. These are things of which I may or may not have been consciously aware before the experience. These issues are dealt with on the spiritual level and cannot be readily put into words. It is as though all of our consensual reality is a reflection/shadow of a deeper spiritual reality, and Ayahusca deals with the problems on this spiritual plane, the result of which is that 'healing' occurs in our consensual reality.
Without fail, the entities are the most extraordinarily amazing things to see no matter how much Ayahuasca experience I have had. There is a certainty that these 'others' encountered do not originate from myself. This experience of 'other than self' encountered via the medium of Ayahuasca is a most profound spiritual experience.
At the time the experience is taking place I am not just seeing visions with my mind's eye but am completely immersed in the totality of the Ayahuasca Space. I don't just see another world, I am actually in another reality. I dont just see an entity in front of me, there actually is an entity in front of me. No amount of science or logic (and I have 2 science degrees and am as logical/rational as they come) will be able to stand up against the awe-inspiring fact that I actually am in a genuine spiritual space.
After about 1.5 hours there seems to be an 'intromission'. I have just had all recent 'issues' dealt with. It seems that Ayahusaca needs to clear out these troubling issues before getting down to the serious business. I usually manage to get up and go to the toilet if i need to. I know from experience that it is not over yet, and so I get back to my space as soon as possible for phase 2.
Now phase 2 is what makes Ayahuacsca and particulary Chaliponga the serious business that it is. My recent 'issues' have been cleared up in phase 1, as though Ayahuasca was preparing the mind for what is to come, and the 'healing' aspect of Ayahuasca is almost an accidental by-product. I almost always entirely forget this phase. I think the human brain is unable to record any of it into memory because it is not really taking place in the brain. Just as a radio receiver can detect radio waves and 'play' music without being able to record that music. In phase 2 ones 'higher spiritual self' or whatever label you may want to use, deals with entities and matters entirely within a spiritual plane. Here, words fail, concepts fail, and the best I can do is to hold on and ride it out. I believe this is where one's initial respect and intention comes into play.
After successfully riding through Phase 2, there is a sense of relief and a touch of euphoria, a mixture amazement and awe, and definite feeling of having emerged from something extraordinary. Music sounds great, and my mood is generally lifted, even though 20 mins earlier I may have been dealing with something of frightening intensity. Once Ayahuasca is over, it is over, and this containment and shutting down of the experience is a blessing. Peaceful sleep follows easily.
I think that the emphasis on trying to describe the Ayahuasca Space in words and concepts based in consensual reality is a mistake. What needs to be emphasised more with Ayahuasca is not the visual spectacle encountered, but the respect one must bring to the experience, the preparation of the ceremonial space, the spiritual seriousness of the undertaking, and the severity and power of chaliponga.
