Kratom sounded like something that would be right up my alley, so to speak. After doing a little online research and finding a well-reviewed vendor, I ordered two 4g packets of 20x standardized extract powder for around $40. It arrived as promised a few days later. On a dreary, boring Saturday afternoon with nothing better to do, I decided to give it a whirl.

I heated up a mug of water and poured in one of my 4g packets. The packaging stated that the powder would dissolve in any liquid. I was alarmed at first, as the kratom formed a nasty looking clump in the water and didn't immediately dissolve at all. After some stirring it finally did, more like in suspension than dissolving, however. More stirring was required to get and keep the substance off the sides of the mug. I added a bit of honey and a few drops of lime juice for flavor. The taste was foul, although not intolerably so, earthy and dirt-like.

So I downed it and waited. After maybe 45 minutes I noticed a slight pressure behind the eyes, not unlike what I'd feel after a bowl or two of medium-grade weed, but without the stone. I felt a bit more calm and relaxed than usual, although it was very much a subtle feeling, nothing pronounced and no real 'buzz' to speak of. I decided to use the other 4g at this point, in the same way. The effects became slightly more pronounced, especially the relaxation. The sensation lasted for maybe 3-4 hours, I smoked a bowl later in the afternoon and felt it a bit more than usual, but nothing spectacular.

All in all I have to rate kratom as a disappointment, especially when the cost is considered. There wasn't anything there I couldn't have gotten from $5 worth of weed or booze, or a couple codeine 3's. I could see using this stuff more often if an ounce or two went for, say, $20 or so. But comparing this stuff to hydrocodone is way off the mark, kava is a better comparison and honestly kava is the better choice if you ask me. I can't imagine forcing myself to down the amounts of this stuff required to really feel anything worthwhile, sorry.
