I have an extreme fear of the dentist after having dry socket and a botched root canal. So, when I recently found out that I needed several fillings, I was quite anticipatory.

Before going to the dentist, I called his office to ask if I could have a glass of wine before I went in for the fillings. They said that was fine, so I chugged a large glass of white wine at the Spanish restaurant across the street.

Once I got to the office, I had to wait a few minutes and listen to the drills going in the back. Ahh! Once I got back to the chair, I had to endure the shot of novacaine without the gas; then he hooked me up. I was nervous at first because it was on my nose and they were going to be drilling in my mouth, so how would I breathe?!

Within a few minutes of breathing in the gas, I forgot all about that. I am pretty prone to nausea, so I felt that coming on a little bit within the first few minutes, but it went away. I closed my eyes when I first saw him with the drill, but I found that I was comfortable enough to keep my eyes open while he was drilling, and it was much more fun because I could feel the trippiness of the gas.

I felt happy and calm. I wanted to laugh at my own thoughts, but I kept my laughter to myself because I didn't want to interrupt all of the work on my mouth. I kept wanting to ask them why the CD was skipping, but it was actually the RADIO that was on, and part of me knew that, so I didn't ask.

I was out of it though. I felt kind of like I smoked a bunch of marijuana, but it was like I got to pick and choose which effects I wanted. I was completely unaware of my body, too; at some point I realized that I had had my hands clinched so tightly, and they were just covered in sweat. One thing I knew for sure was that I it sounded like I was hearing techno music/skipping CDs and that the pictures on the wall looked trippy!! I also wanted to ask the dentist if he put those pictures there on purpose! I realized after I was cut from the gas that the pictures weren't even that cool.

I was so happy that I wasn't feeling any pain, I just wanted to hug the dentist and the assistant. Dang they were doing a good job. He apologized that the drilling was taking so long a few times, but I DID NOT care at all. Take all the time you need, I thought. I couldn't talk, so I just gave him thumbs-up whenever he said that.

Anyway, I can see why nitrous is a recreational drug, and I am so happy I opted for it.
