This experience actually applies to several experiences with the same substances. I took 150 mg of Effexor XR (venlafaxine) daily for depression between the years of 2002 and 2005. During this time period, I continued to use Ecstasy (MDMA) occasionally, mostly with close friends in a private setting. I tend to enjoy using MDMA in this kind of setting. One reason is that I can trust everyone present. Another reason is that we have control over our climate and surroundings (air conditioning, plenty of fluids available to drink, easy access to the restroom, etc.). Finally, we all enjoy the same kind of music, namely electronic music. All of these factors contribute to a high level of safety and comfort, thus decreasing the risk of MDMA-related complications.

As stated previously, I was taking 150 mg of Effexor XR daily. Before taking Effexor, I typically would take one tablet of Ecstasy at a time, possibly followed up with a booster dose of another tablet several hours later. However, I found that this was not adequate while on Effexor. I noticed that the effects of Ecstasy were reduced, seemingly in half. I assume that this was because Effexor is an SSRI (as well as an SNRI). In order to get around this reduction in effect, I began taking 2 tablets of Ecstasy at a time, possibly followed up with a booster dose of another 2 tablets several hours later. I found that doubling my standard dose of Ecstasy while on Effexor would give me approximately equal effects to a single dose of Ecstasy when not on Effexor. Needless to say, buying twice as much Ecstasy to achieve the same effects can become expensive, and it caused me to use Ecstasy less frequently than before.
