[Erowid Note: Because opiate use can lead to significant tolerance (requiring higher doses for the same effects), the dose used by a first time user is significantly smaller than that used by a regular user. It can be extremely dangerous to choose ones dose on the basis of the amount taken by someone else. Overdoses of opiates can be fatal.]
During the Christmas holidays I ran out of my hydrocodone and my pain managment (PM) doc was back home, in Saudi Arabia I believe. Only one other doc was in the clinic that week and he refused to see me (said it was against policy). Although I could buy them off the internet, I decided to take my MRI and rec's to my family doc - why not let insurance pay for the meds. After looking at my MRI he asked if the hydro was still working for me (I have been taking it for some time). I said 4-6 Norco's each day no longer seem as effective. His response was most unexpected. He said that my PM, in his opinion, was undertreating my pain. Then he asked if I would be opposed to 'testing' some of the many other pain medications on the market. So stunned - all I could manage was a weak 'uh huh' He then listed every prescription narcotic known to the sick and dying, including duragesic patches, dilaudid, morphine, and oxycontin. I felt like a kid in a candy shop. He said let's start with the oxycontin 40mg 3x/day with Norco for breakthrough. He said if that doesn't work we will move on to other things - and then mentioned another list of short acting meds Oxyfast, lollipops, etc. [Gosh, I hope this man lives for awhile because he has done more to help me than my Neuro or PM combined].

That evening I took a OC 40 and after about 45 minutes a nice warm glow was developing - the pain was decreasing but not as much as I thought it would. A couple of hours passed and I reached for the Norco. My brain disagreed with this combination and protested with a harsh headache. I then decided to break off half an OC and although it tasted nasty I was impressed with the way it relieved all pain, headache included. Almost instantly a wave of well being swept over me and lasted for an hour or so. As I inspected the Christmas lights in my yard, I recalled the words of my elderly, hillbilly, doctor. He said 'son this medication is highly abused and is known as hillbilly herion. But then, people tend to abuse things that work.' I see what he means.
