Okay, exaggeration, but it can induce massive visual and aural hallucinations and extreme mind/body dissociation. I've talked to some people who've said the quality of the dissociative and hallucinogenic effects it has on your cognition are similar to PCP's. I'm fascinated with the history and impact on the mind of these types of drugs in particular, so naturally, when I read about salvia divinorum online, I was interested in achieving the trance-like state it offers.
So, let's get right to it: packed a waterpipe with full bowl of 10x extract and inhaled all in one big hit. It didn't take long for me to find out if it was going to work for me or not. Within ten seconds of intake, I was hearing alien buzzes, noises, and tones all in harmony following some tribal rhythm. It began far in the distance, then came closer and closer until my entire body was engulfed in this sound. SOUND! My senses were saturated. I lost complete touch with reality, and my perception of my surroundings were at pretty much a zero. I did not know where I was, how I'd gotten there, or why this voice was telling me, 'ketchup, Dylan. KETCHUP!'
My psyche was like a children's playground. I looked down at my winged heart-covered pajama pants and watched as they flew right off the material and into the sky. My entire body was glued to my seat. Wait, was this my body? Okay, now it was getting a little scary. I had no control over the hallucinations, and they weren't euphoric like ones from acid or peyote. This spiraled into a delusional state of feeling lost in some alien galaxy where movement slowed to a crawl and every new second brought forth the beginning of some new era. I sat up over and over again without moving while the alien chant continued. Were they counting? Communicating to eachother? Communicating to me?! After all, this is all happening inside my own brain. Where did this foreign sound come from?
'This isn't reality, you're on psychoactive drugs, DYLAN Dylan dylan! ECHO Echo echo!!!'
Oh, right. For a second there, I thought gravity was wrapping itself around my arms and swaying me left and right. I thought there was an observer in my head seeing things through my eyes (feelings of a present 'entity', as it's often put). I apologized to her (him...it?) when I fell down trying to walk to the bathroom because I felt like I hurt both of us. I really was sorry. The other observers thought I was crazy.
Did I mention I did this alone? Big mistake. Having had a slew of other psychedelic experiences (I'm a veteran DXM tripper), I figured I could handle this one on my own, but in retrospect, I should've brought a trip sitter (hey Teiji, thanks for telling me I wouldn't need one for this. I owe you. =P). I made it out alive, but I would've preferred having someone there just to keep things at an even cool. I read up on the science and peoples' personal experiences before trying it, and I didn't expect it to hit me as hard and as fast as it did.
However, it was gone almost as soon as it arrived...I'd peaked at 10-12 minutes, and began coming down between 15-20. After regaining control of my basic motor functions and ability to think and use my body properly (I experienced extreme mind/body dissociation at the peak), I smoked a couple bowls of pot, which calmed my nerves down and put me in an enjoyable and mildly lucid dream-like state. I packed up another bowl of the salvia (about half of what I took the first time), smoked it, and was again hit by the effects within 10 seconds, only they weren't as intense or incapacitating because I had my limit pretty much figured out at this point. I knew what amount it took to completely give myself away to the salvia's grasp, but taking less yeilded a milder and more enjoyable high (and shorter...effects are gone within minutes), especially mixed with marijuana.
So, in conclusion, this is definitely NOT a recreational drug for me, and I'd say it's a very encompassing and unpredictable high which lacks the pleasantness of an acid or shroom trip.
