I took a handful of dried root bark (regular bark probably works too), cut it up with scissors and simmered it into a cups worth of tea for about 20 minutes. The tea came out so strong and bitter that I could only drink a good shot of it, about half a cup, and that left my throat and stomach reeling. It made me cough and swallow mucus for the next 20 minutes, and I had to wash it down with some more water, but it really wasn't too bad. I guess it was the tannins. There should be a way to mitigate that.
The effects came on pretty quickly, within 10 minutes or so. This stuff is no joke. There is absolutely no doubt that it is a powerful psychoactive plant. I was in bed, waiting to go to sleep, and staring at my blanket as it moved with my breathing. The blanket seemed to be alive and breathing on its own. Other shapes in the room seemed to move and breath. It was similar to a light Psilocybin tea in the visuals - a sense of motion around me - rolling floors, breathing walls and ambient light seemingly fading to dark and back again. A vague sense of giddiness and pressure. Pretty impressive.
What set this experience apart was the intense euphoria, which I guess is why the Chinese called it the 'Collective Happiness Tree.' The experience might have been a bit scary - shadowy figures in the room seemed alive and lurking, and my thoughts were vivid, dark and twisted - but the euphoria was so strong that I couldn't stop thinking that it was all good. There was a permanent grin on my face, and I was way more baked in my elation than from any cannabis has ever gotten me. Very nice.
My thoughts were all over the place, and many old memories and deep emotions resurfaced, but I didn't want to think too much. After about 20 minutes, it was getting pretty intense.
After about 20 minutes, it was getting pretty intense.
That night, my dreams were a non-stop saga. They were not necessarily pleasant. Without getting into too much detail, there was a dream involving a giant, man-eating crocodile that I accidentally created and set loose in my neighborhood, and an apocalyptic sequence where I escaped across a large city suspension bridge right before it was blown up. But none of these were anything compared to the next 'nightmare' which was a dream that seemed to last hours, and involved me trying to remove an infestation of bed bugs which I accidentally infested a local church with. God, those bed bugs are the worst. That was based on a true story. The dreams were very lucid and seemed to hone in on real life past experiences and feelings of guilt and other difficult emotions. The lucidity of the dreams and the euphoria from the drug, which lasted all night, made the dreams bearable, and even a bit humerus, and they never really pulled me into any real terror. I slept an average 8 hours or so and woke up still glowing, a bit scatterbrained but well rested and full of energy.
In conclusion, this is not a DMT containing tree, but there's no doubt it has something which effects similar mechanisms in the brain. The effect on perception, dreams, and euphoria were not your run of the mill herbal remedy type. There is something powerfully psychoactive here, more approaching the class of psylocibin, LSD and DMT. Taste aside, I could easily have convinced myself that I had drank some mushroom tea (maybe 1/3 of an 8th of brewed shrooms would have compared).
