I was 28 and had to volunteered to provide medical assistance in East Africa (its probably best not to name the country). Let’s just say it’s a former British colony and it’s been through some rough times. There was a break down in sanitation and I was in the capital helping to help deal with an infectious (but easily preventable and treatable disease).

I have had migraines for many years and when I travel often throw a few vials of Toradol in my bag. Maybe it was the heat or lack of sleep, but I had a killer headache and Toradol wouldn’t touch it. From past experience I knew I could get just about anything OTC. So I made my way to a large clinic, and explained my situation to the pharmacist and he recommend pethidine. But said this would need a doctor visit (about $5 US). I saw the doc in about 10 min and left with Rx in hand (along with the recommendation to take some clonopin at night and phenergan). I collected the meds (another $10 US). They offered to administer the pethidine IM in the clinic but given the state of the facility and my experience, I said I’d do this back at my hotel. Off I went with the meds.

I’ve had IM pethidine a few times in the past and wasn’t impressed... but noticed the ampoule was labeled Pethidine 50mg/mL 2mL total for IM, SQ or IV use. So in for a penny in for a pound... I drew up the vial and injected it into my ac vein. The rush was instantaneous and nearly knocked me to the floor. It took a good 2-3 minutes to compose myself enough to get rid of the rig and put on a bandage.

I laid in bed for another 30-45 min enjoying this amazing high and total freedom from pain. Slowly it wore off and I was back to normal.

During my stay I managed to score pethidine a few more times. What was noticeable, was that even with larger doses (200-300mg) I was able to get an amazing high... I was never able to recreate the amazing rush I had that first night.
