Intro: After research I decided to try an ayahuasca analog for the first time for spiritual guidance. I have tried other psychoactive substances before including mushrooms and LSD.
The recipe I tried was based on [forum URL], with the addition of lemon juice.
I had an intention of asking the spirit world about what direction to take in life (I feel myself at a crossroads) and hopefully to get help in reducing my penchant for excessive drinking. I was a bit anxious about trying this for the first time without a shaman or experienced sitter, but sometimes one has to be one's own guru. My wife knew what I was doing, but has had no experience with hallucinogens.
On the day of consumption, I had a normal breakfast and lunch, and then no food thereafter until 8pm when I started the tea. I was not on any prescription medications, nor any other drugs (e.g. alcohol, cannabis etc)
The Prep: 1 tablespoon powdered Acacia confusa bark
ฝ tablespoon Syrian Rue seeds
big squirt lemon juice
5 mugs water (approx)
I simmered all the ingredients in a stainless steel pan for a few hours, filtered (using a coffee filter) and then put powder back in with 2 more mugs water and simmered again. After these 2 washes I had around 400ml of tea which I bottled and put in fridge for 3 days. Removing from fridge I simmered again to give an end result of ฝ mug of analog tea.
The Experience:
T: 0:00 Start to slowly drink the OK smelling but horribly tasting tea.
T + 20 mins Finish tea and take a walk in the nearby forest
T + 1 hour Maybe some slight effects enhanced shapes of trees. A 'yawny jaw' (always on the cusp of yawning and slight tightness in jaw I have noticed I get this with mushrooms on a few occasions).
T + 1:10 Some very slight vomiting.
T + 1:45 After no further or increased effects I head home thinking that maybe dose too weak or ingredients not so potent.
T + 2:30 Go to bed with a cup of tea feeling a bit tired. Shortly after start to hallucinate properly with friendly closed eye visuals and open eye distortions. E.g. with eyes open, my fingers would look a bit stuck together as I moved my fingers together and apart again. A greenish 'digital' looking glow around things. Feel tired, but body restless (lots of wriggling around on bed). My wife spoke to me a little, and I could listen and talk OK, but talking seemed less preferential to lying quietly.
I'm not sure how long this lasted, (I would guess between 1 to 2 hours), as I fell asleep after some time, and woke up the next day feeling fine and normal.
Conclusions:
Yes, it tastes as bad as everyone says!
Effects may be slow to take place. It's possible consuming something (in my case just regular red bush tea) may help get things working there are a few other reports of this. With hindsight, as I was a little tired from the previous days' real life responsibilities, I should have taken the analog an hour or two earlier to have had more energy to appreciate the effects.
This seems like a reasonable first-timer dose. Whilst in the hallucinating stage a thought came to me that, as with all psychoactives, there isn't an off button, and so people should always err on the side of caution.
Although there was no spiritual breakthrough, it was a successful first attempt and I will proceed again when the time is right.
