Bushman's Khatastrophy
Catha edulis & Sceletium tortuosum
Citation:   Dreamfrique. "Bushman's Khatastrophy: An Experience with Catha edulis & Sceletium tortuosum (exp101793)". Erowid.org. Oct 5, 2015. erowid.org/exp/101793

DOSE:
4 leaves oral Catha edulis (fresh)
3 g oral Sceletium tortuosum (dried)
BODY WEIGHT: 58 kg
Being in the business of supplying Entheogens, my husband and I regularly experiment with various combinations of plants. We were planning an energizing, uplifting drink to sell at a dance festival and had decided that Bushman’s Tea was the thing.

On the list of stocked items, we sell live Catha edulis plants as well as dried fermented Sceletium tortuosum, two types of 40x extract of the Sceletium and a 15x smoker’s extract. Up to this point, we had experienced the Sceletium in all its possible strengths without mixing it with anything and have grown quite a fondness for this plant's gentle empathogenic effects. This was the first Sceletium-Khat blend we tried.

The recipe:
8 Catha edulis (Southern African variety) leaves, picked fresh from the garden
6g of Sceletium tortuosum, finely ground
1 banana
2 teaspoons of honey
1 cup of milk

This was blended to a smooth consistency.

Hubby downed his while I chose to swirl the mixture around in my mouth. While not actually delicious, it beats the hell out of cactus and cannot appear on the same taste page as Calea zachatechichi (which is still the foulest tasting tea I have ever imbibed). Hubby was soon running around the garden energetically weeding, watering and mowing. I sat on the bed, feeling very similar to the last time I took MDMA (about 10 years ago), which is to say I felt awful. I had the whole “rushy” experience and did not want to get out of bed. I sat there for about an hour, feeling as though I wanted to climb out of my skin and couldn’t find the zipper. I felt slightly nauseous and I knew that sleeping it off was not an option. My heart rate went up by about 20 beats per second, so not quite palpitations, but a notable increase. It was 45 minutes before I felt well enough to get up and wonder around and I had no appetite for about four hours after. I was able to go to sleep 9 hours after the dose was ingested.

Hubby said he felt mentally alert and energized and enjoyed the rush. We are not hugely different in weight and he is usually a lot more sensitive to effects than I am. I have a feeling that less of what I drank may have felt like more and that the swishing and swirling in my mouth led to more absorption. I may try this again in a smaller dose, but only if I know I have nothing pressing on the agenda.
